Knowledge Transfer Office
A dedicated Knowledge Transfer team has
been established within PML Applications Ltd to identify
Intellectual Property (IP) and new commercial opportunities within
Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML).
PML, a Public Sector Research Establishment (PSRE), has been
delivering sustained research outputs for three decades and has
made significant contributions to international programmes, as well
as national policy and strategy for marine research and
management.
PML has a vast marine science knowledge base. The primary role
of the Knowledge Transfer (KT) Office is to develop processes to
identify, protect and exploit intellectual property from the
knowledge base and to identify exploitation routes for this IP, for
example, through spin out companies or licensing agreements.
The initial focus concerned capacity building through a range of
measures and training that targeted identification, management and
exploitation of IP. This included reviewing ‘best practice’ and
working with leading technology transfer experts. The
latest programme (2009-2011) continued the capacity building
and also has a significant element to invest funds in
‘proof-of-concept’, links to examples of which are given
below.
