Ballast Water Services

PML Applications will accelerate and advance the development and validation of ballast water

treatment technology through expert knowledge of the marine environment. Providing over 30

years’ research experience in marine bacteria, viruses, plankton ecology and seawater quality (the

fundamental skills required for ballast water management).

PML Applications has unrivalled capability to conduct credible, objective and impartial scientific assessments of ballast water treatment technologies. In addition, PML Applications provides reviews of current technologies and the regulations governing them to ensure best fit for commercial partners.

PML Applications will:

- Work with developers, manufacturers and end-users of ballast water treatment technology worldwide

- Test ballast water treatment technology efficacy

- Assist with and accelerate novel technology development

- Model the fate of treated ballast water in the environment

- Perform scaled tests

- Conduct expert treatment assessment against IMO D2 or other regulations

- Provide access to field test facilities

- Prepare statistically robust ballast water sampling strategies

- Develop green button instrumentation to test ballast water treatment efficiency

- Provide culture facilities for micro-organisms

- Provide evidence and expert witness advice

- Provide IMO and Port State ecological risk assessments and port surveys

Providing solutions

Developing technologies - PML Applications works with a range of clients from small businesses to major companies to accelerate development and improve ballast water treatment technologies.

Risk assessments - As a world leader in satellite data interpretation, marine ecology and ecosystem modelling, PML Applications provides a unique combination of skills to assess risks posed by marine traffic and invasive species. When combined with vessel tracking, this allows ship and port operators to undertake risk assessments and optimise ballast water exchange thereby reducing operational costs, potentially leading to exemptions under IMO regulation A-4 (G7).

Recent projects include

PML Applications has been working with ballast water treatment technology developers to develop new treatment systems for the shipping industry. The work included scaled prototype evaluation and the development of a novel bacteria removal system combined with modelling of ballast water discharges.

PML Applications has conducted an independent and impartial assessment of a client’s system against the IMO G8 and G9 active substance regulation.
